The Shift from Hobbyist to Contract Manufacturer
Anyone can buy a desktop 3D printer and print decorative desk toys. Operating a reliable manufacturing hub means guaranteeing that part #1 and part #500 meet exact engineering drawings within specified dimensional tolerances.
At FamilyMake, quality control is not an afterthought-it is an integrated metrology workflow applied to every production batch.
Our Inspection Protocol
- First Article Inspection (FAI): The first part off any production run undergoes complete dimensional verification with calibrated Mitutoyo digital calipers and micrometers against the 2D engineering drawing.
- Pin & Plug Gauges: Critical bore holes and bearing pockets are validated using Class X go/no-go pin gauges (+/-0.001 mm accuracy). If a 6.0 mm hole accepts a 6.05 mm no-go pin, the batch is rejected and extruder calibration is adjusted.
- Optical Comparators: Complex 2D profiles, thread pitches, and small cantilever snaps are inspected optically to verify geometry without physical contact deflection.
Documenting Process Repeatability
We log ambient workshop humidity, chamber temperature graphs, and filament batch lot numbers. Every commercial batch ships with an inspection checklist confirming measured critical dimensions against client tolerances.
